Coconut water is one of the delicious drinks that have lots of health benefits. It is one of the most opted for summer drinks as it helps to stay hydrated and beat the heat. Even though we know that it is good to include coconut water for skin health, it helps in weight maintenance, it is good for athletics etc but the stage of Pregnancy is such that we think twice before including any food even though it is generally healthy. Similarly, we also think, how about including coconut water during pregnancy? Is coconut water good for pregnant women?

Ideally, foods that do not make the list of foods allowed in pregnancy are the ones with potentially negative effects on health during pregnancy. It is not in the case of Coconut water. You can drink coconut water in pregnancy in moderation.

Coconut water contains 95% water. It helps to quench the thirst. The water requirement in the body increases during pregnancy to form Amniotic fluid, to build tissues, carry nutrition, to build extra blood. The electrolytes in coconut water help to maintain a proper fluid balance which will help to stay hydrated.  It also helps you feel refreshed. Feeling refreshed will also help the skin glow and feel fresh. This rejuvenating and refreshing feeling also adds to the benefits of coconut water for skin wellbeing.

2. Coconut water Helps to maintain the Electrolyte and Fluid levels

Coconut water has a good amount of Electrolyte minerals like Sodium, potassium magnesium, and phosphorus. A very common problem during pregnancy is morning sickness, where the pregnant lady faces issues like nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea which might lead to loss of water and electrolytes. Coconut water helps to replenish the electrolytes and fluids lost in a pregnant lady especially during morning sickness and through sweating. Hence, the best time to drink coconut water for mommies is in the morning.

Constipation and acid reflux is a very common problem faced during pregnancy. According to Ayurveda, drinking coconut water daily also has a laxative effect which helps to manage constipation. There are some myths about coconut water. One of the very common ones is does coconut water help with labour? Ideally, there are no studies that support the same, but yes it helps to manage the increased pressure levels in the 3rd trimester due to the labor pain stress. It should not be used as an alternative to pressure reducing medication, though.

Side Effects of Coconut Water

There are no side effects of coconut water during pregnancy, but if you are tracking the sugar levels due to Gestational Diabetes then the intake can be limited. Even though it helps in Hydration, it should not be used as a replacement for water. And the coconut water should be consumed fresh and not stored for a long time. Prefer to have the Fresh coconut water rather than the packaged one and if including the packaged ones, do check the best before date.
